The Unrequited

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

1. THE UNREQUITED by Saffron A. Kent

SYNOPSIS

Layla Robinson is not crazy. She is suffering from unrequited love. But it’s time to move on. No more stalking, no more obsessive calling.

What she needs is a distraction. The blue-eyed guy she keeps seeing around campus could be a great one—only he is the new poetry professor—the married poetry professor.

Thomas Abrams is a stereotypical artist—rude, arrogant, and broody—but his glares and taunts don’t scare Layla. She might be bad at poetry, but she is good at reading between the lines. Beneath his prickly façade, Thomas is lonely, and Layla wants to know why. Obsessively.

Sometimes you do get what you want. Sometimes you end up in the storage room of a bar with your professor and you kiss him. Sometimes he kisses you back like the world is ending and he will never get to kiss you again. He kisses you until you forget the years of unrequited love; you forget all the rules, and you dare to reach for something that is not yours.

BOOK REVIEW

Saffron A. Kent definitely knows her forbidden romance. The Unrequited was a mix of desire and guilt and regret. The writing was phenomenal, a strong case of show-don’t-tell. It was electric. The words jumped off the pages, which I couldn’t help but turn non-stop, and crawled on my goosebumpy skin and sank claws into the tender flesh.

“I’m ravenous for Layla. I’m ravenous for the power she gives me. I want to abuse that power, unleash it, use it against her. I want to destroy her like I’m destroyed in this moment. She is too brave for her own good. I want to destroy that bravery, that pure courage.”

Layla Robinson was a broken girl with a passionate heart (not an organ but an animal of its own) and desperation to love deeply that was as shocking as it was compelling. Her twisted psyche was the most fascinating part of her character as well as the entire story. Her life was a chaotic but beautiful disaster full of uncontrolled impulses, dire complications, and inevitable heartbreak, and I absolutely loved every second of it.

“He needs me. He needs to exert his power over me because his love has made him powerless. He needs me because his love has made him a beggar himself. The lust he feels for me comes from the love he feels for her.”

Thomas Abrams was Layla’s rather moody poetry professor. Dark, arrogant, and dangerously alluring. His selfishness and inability to make a grown-up decision pissed me off, but I totally got it… since his life reminded me of a messed-up train wreck I simply couldn’t tear my eyes from.

“In this moment, my hands mold him. I’m the sculptor who creates him.”

The chemistry between Layla and Thomas was unbelievable. The sexy times were scorching hot, so vivid and mesmerizing and sensual. Thomas’s dirty-talk was off the charts. I could tell the man knew his way around the words.

The main characters were so raw and real. Their growth was slow but organic with lots of stupid mistakes fuelled by regretful words and oftentimes unforgivable actions.

The Unrequited was a gritty, intense coming-of-age love story that kept tugging at my heart and ultimately left me breathless. If you are looking for a controversial but highly addicting read, the book is definitely for you. Don’t miss this hidden gem!
