1. KISS AN ANGEL by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
SYNOPSIS
Pretty, flighty Daisy Devreaux can either go to jail or marry the mystery man her father has chosen for her. Arranged marriages don’t happen in the modern world, so how did the irrepressible Daisy find herself in this fix?
Alex Markov, as humorless as he is deadly handsome, has no intention of playing the loving bridegroom to a spoiled little feather-head with champagne tastes. He drags Daisy from her uptown life to a broken down traveling circus and sets out to tame her to his ways.
But this man without a soul has met his match in a woman who’s nothing but heart. Before long, passion will send them flying sky high without a safety net... risking it all in search of a love that will last forever.
BOOK REVIEW
I have no idea how I’ve never come across Susan Elizabeth Phillips before. Kiss an Angel was the ‘magic of Romancelandia come true’. This book was absolutely brilliant. A literal perfection with the swooniest characters ever, both human beings and animals.
Like the circus animals, she was held captive against her will, and, like them, her keeper had all the power.
Theodosia Devreaux aka Daisy was a 26-year-old spoiled silly girl with her life far from being figured out. She had gotten herself into so much big of trouble because of her never-ending stupid decisions, and the only way her powerful father would have offered a hand of help was a marriage of convenience to whoever he had chosen for her. Of course, being the very surface-level bitch she initially was, Daisy was not happy but still took the deal. Because? Money duh. Now, you might wonder then, how the fuck I came to love her character so damn much, and my answer would be—Theodosia was a grown-up child with a very kind, naive, and romantic heart. And that was practically everything I never realized I needed. Plus, she underwent so much character development throughout the book that you’ll never doubt my judging skill ever again once you finish reading Kiss an Angel yourself.
His fists clenched at his sides. “Damn it! Where’s your pride?”
“Pride? It’s in my heart, of course.”
“You’re letting me demean you!”
She smiled. “You can’t do that. I can only demean myself.”
Alexander Markov was Daisy’s awful wedded husband. Just like her, he was definitely not happy about the inconvenient arrangement. The man was a dark and broody type who thought of himself as being someone incapable, as well as undeserving of love. That’s all you need to know about him. I loved him, and you’ll do too. No matter how big of an asshole he was at certain moments in the book.
She was in a warm elephant cave. She pressed her cheek to his scratchy, gunnysack body just between his legs and heard the strong thud of his sweet, mischievous heart. She knew she should move, but even though she was resting beneath a ton of a baby elephant, she had never felt safer. As she sat there, she thought of Alex and wished he were small enough to fit where she was, right beneath Tater's heart.
Daisy and Alex were a match made in heaven. The chemistry between the two was insane (and I don’t mean a sexual one only). I cannot stress enough my appreciation of Theodosia’s vulnerabilities and insecurities. It might sound ridiculous, but they were what made her see that there was more than met the eye to her husband, all while helping him realize that Daisy was the sweetest and the most selfless and generous in terms of feelings creature in his life.
I absolutely loved to witness the very process of them falling in love with each other. Every single laugh, and touch, and kiss. Perfection!
Long story short—don’t waste your time as I did, and go grab Kiss an Angel right fucking now!
PS. Can I briefly mention the fact that Susan Elizabeth Phillips did an amazing job delivering the idea of the unacceptability of mistreatment of wild animals in their unnatural habitats? Applause, applause, applause.
Daisy’s relationship with the animals in the circus was a highlight of the entire book. Applause, applause, applause.
