Wait with Me

Crazy, funny, sweet, and heart-wrenching.

1. WAIT WITH ME by Amy Daws

SYNOPSIS

When romance novelist Kate Smith suddenly gets writer’s block as she’s beginning the final installment of her international bestselling steamy Bed ‘n Breakfast series, she’ll do pretty much anything to get her groove back. Like sneak into a Tire Depot waiting room because her words flow there just like complimentary coffee-smooth, sweet, and scorchingly hot.

She manages to fly under the radar until the rugged and charming mechanic, Miles Hudson, notices the quirky redhead slinking in and out of the employees only entrance. But she’s way too intriguing to blow the whistle on. Doing a test-drive of her new book idea sounds like a much better option.

The big snag: Sam and Maggie’s chemistry is hot enough to melt ice, which makes keeping their secret far more difficult than either expected. Especially when one of them decides they want this arrangement to be more than just a catch and release.

3. ONE MOMENT PLEASE by Amy Daws

SYNOPSIS

That awkward moment when an ER doctor has to inform you that you're pregnant… with his baby.

Three things Lynsey Jones knows about the hot doctor: he’s grouchy, an arrogant jerk, and strangely obsessed with pie.

Three things Dr. Josh Richardson knows: he doesn’t talk about his past, he doesn’t do relationships, and the crazy girl in the hospital cafeteria who ate a fistful of French silk pie... is annoyingly irresistible.

After a chance meetup at a bar and a heated cab ride together, things come to a head and now instead of hating each other, they’re horizontal in a bed. Three months later, the weird cafeteria stalker who crept out of Josh’s house like a thief in the night, winds up as his patient in the ER after her Tinder date from hell. The doctor is prepared to keep it cool and professional. That is until her bloodwork reveals that she’s pregnant. What really throws him for a loop... is that the surprise baby... is his.

BOOK REVIEW

I’m usually not a huge fan of the surprise pregnancy trope, but I really enjoyed this one. Amy Daws is one of the very few rom-com authors I read nowadays. Her words are light-hearted, while the general flow of a story is smooth and clear, and the plot is filled with hilarious banter and back-and-forth.

I’ve learned that it’s okay to let yourself feel happy, man. I want that for you too. More than you could ever know.

Josh was an emotionally closed-off character, resisting to feel and especially refusing to love. He was grumpy but cute at the same time. He exemplified the romanticized notion of a person hit by a destined feeling of belonging one cannot help but desire.

“I know I won’t be able to protect you guys from everything, and that’s okay because loving is what makes life worth living.”

Lynsey was a tad bit crazy and clumsy and so so warm. I liked her character, but I felt like she was a means to an end of some sort in the book… Josh’s closed-off demeanor was a striking difference to Lynsey’s way of embracing and approaching life. I adored his over-protectiveness and stiffness. And I loved the evolution of his feelings towards Lynsey. The more time those two spent together, the more open and loving Josh became, while Lynsey stayed true to herself.

Josh hands me a bottle of water while cracking a beer for himself. I eye it enviously. “Tell me what it tastes like. Describe it in vivid detail.”

“It’s IPA,” he grumbles, wincing slightly at his first sip, “which means it tastes like piss.”

I sigh dopily. “Sounds magical.”

The chemistry between Josh and Lynsey was questionable... meaning, it felt somewhat forced. However, I did like the majority of sweet and intimate moments the main characters shared. The humour was on point but sometimes seemed a little bit extensive.

Overall, One Moment Please was a quick and easy read. Sweet, tender, and charming. If you have had enough of this quarantine, go grab the book, and entertain yourself.
